First impressions are really important! Your professional headshot is a great way to leave a memorable impression on social media channels, flyers, business cards, etc.
We want to support you by making it as easy as possible for you to get one! Below you will find suggested tips and the most reasonable ways to get the best pictures if you are unable to work with a professional photographer.
Get assistance
- Have a friend or family member assist you with taking pictures
- If this is not possible, consider using a tripod
- When using a mobile device:
- Place your phone somewhere stable (such as a well lit table top area or window sill) and use the “timer option”
- Use Portrait Mode if available (supported on iOS devices, providing a clear picture and blurred background)
Choosing what to wear
Be mindful of the most common interactions that you will have. You will be meeting with beneficiaries and sometimes with carriers. In our industry it’s not necessary to wear a suit, but dressing in business casual attire has a commanding, but welcoming presence.
- Male common attire - trousers, slacks, button-downs or polo shirts.
- Female common attire - skirts, blouses, button-down shirts, trousers, khakis, blazers and sweaters. If you choose to wear jewelry or belts be mindful of glare and color.
- Unisex attire - slacks, button-downs, khakis, blazers, sweaters or polo shirts.
- Any attire - if you choose to wear jewelry or belts be mindful of glare and color.
*choose solid colors over patterns and stay away from bright colors. Remember also to focus on colors connected to your brand.
Choosing a background
- You are the center of attention when it comes to your headshot, make sure to keep it simple.
- Focus on a neutral background with solid colors or even something with a brick background.
Once you find your background be mindful of lighting
- Natural light in the morning or evening sun providers a softer look compared to a flash
- If you can’t go outside, standing by a window helps (w/your back facing the window)
